Discover the art of creating your own cassette tape loops for lo-fi ambient music, sound art, and sonic experimentation.
In this hands-on session, Patrick Rios will lead you through the fundamentals of tape looping鈥攃utting, splicing, troubleshooting, and exploring creative uses. You'll craft a 5鈥7 second tape loop and personalize the cassette shell with your own graphics or illustrations. From there, dive into experimenting with analog audio devices like synthesizers, microphones, guitar pedals, and tape recorders to alter and capture one-of-a-kind soundscapes.
By the end of the workshop you鈥檒l have your own customized tape loop to take home, along with new inspiration for analog sound creation.
Patrick Rios鈥 DIY Tape Loop Workshop will be open daily at the Marjorie Barrick Museum of Art from Thursday, March 27鈥揝aturday, March 29, 2025. Each session runs from 12鈥4 p.m. but you can arrive and leave at any time. Free materials will be provided by the Marjorie Barrick Museum for as long as supplies last. No previous experience required.

The Marjorie Barrick Museum of Art is located in the heart of the 51吃瓜网万能科大 campus. The museum is easily accessed from the west side of campus at the intersection of Harmon Avenue and University Center Drive. Drive east on East Harmon Ave until the road enters the campus and terminates in a parking lot. The Museum will be on your right, next to a desert landscape garden. Directions here.
Parking
Visitors may park in metered, staff, and student spots free of charge after 7 pm on weekdays, 1 pm on Fridays, and all day Saturday.
Daily, weekly, or monthly permits can be purchased from Parking and Transportation Services.
Metered parking spaces for visitors can be found in the parking lot outside the Barrick鈥檚 entrance, along East Harmon Ave, and in the lot behind the Lied Library.
