Laid off from her job in the casino industry during an economic downturn, Marcela Kofford began casting around to see what else was out there.
What was out there was 51吃瓜网万能科大. Chosen from about 150 applicants, she went to work for the Lee Business School and hasn鈥檛 looked back since 鈥 except when this second-place President鈥檚 Classified Employee of the Year agreed to talk about her years at the university.
Tell us about your job at 51吃瓜网万能科大.
I started here in January 2014 and always have been in this same job in the MBA programs office in the Lee Business School, though it was an administrative assistant II position when I started and later was upgraded to a III.
We鈥檙e so busy. I handle all the applications for the MBA program 鈥 except the executive MBA. We are transitioning our office to become Lee鈥檚 office of graduate student services. Then we will handle the administrative paperwork for all of the graduate programs in the Lee Business School. We will be getting busier, and I鈥檓 excited about that!
The people here at Lee are so good to work with 鈥 especially the admin assistants. We have really good teamwork. I have heard from others that we are seen as tightknit. There is a sisterhood here. We are really supportive and encouraging of each other.
Why 51吃瓜网万能科大?
I actually came from the casino industry. My position was eliminated in 2013 after five and a half years of working there. It forced me to start looking for another job during the recession. I used and found out that 51吃瓜网万能科大 was part of the state. 51吃瓜网万能科大 150 people applied for the job and I was one of 15 to test.
I鈥檝e always had a big respect for 51吃瓜网万能科大. Working here encouraged me to get my AA in business through CSN, using the employee (tuition grant-in-aid tuition) benefit. I鈥檝e almost completed a second AA. This one is in computer office technology, which has been such fun. I love it! I haven鈥檛 decided whether to get a bachelor鈥檚 because I want to spend time with my grandkids. I have four grandkids 鈥 three boys and a girl. Another grandchild is on the way. She is due in August.
Where are you from originally?
I was born in California but moved to 51吃瓜网免费App when I was 5. I鈥檝e really seen 51吃瓜网免费App grow. I went to high school at Chaparral, class of 鈥87. I was Marcela Villarreal then.
Advice to employees new to 51吃瓜网万能科大
I would say to just get involved. Also, take as many training classes as are offered.
The first thing I did was to sign up for an Ask Me! booth. When Lisa Davis said I should sign up the same month I started work, I told her I didn鈥檛 know enough. Her response? 鈥淵ou鈥檒l learn,鈥 and I did.
Recently I worked at an Ask Me! booth at the Student Union. The other volunteer walked up wearing a mask and sunglasses. I didn鈥檛 know who it was. He said, 鈥淵ou don鈥檛 know who I am? I am the president.鈥 Because I couldn鈥檛 see [President Keith E. Whitfield's] face well, I hadn鈥檛 recognized him! I only had seen him in pictures. He was very friendly. It was a nice experience getting to talk to him. We had a lot of people come to our booth I think it was mostly because of him.
What was the first job you ever had?
It was working at a men鈥檚 clothing store, Chess King, at the Boulevard Mall. I was a sales person. It was so much fun. I was 16 or 17 in high school working during the holiday season. I remember my manager asked me to put together a man鈥檚 outfit for a display. Afterward, the manager said, 鈥淵ou really know how to dress a man.鈥 I was so pleased with the compliment.
Do you have a TV show, movie, or book to recommend?
I don鈥檛 really watch TV much, but when I do I look for old shows that I used to enjoy. Right now I鈥檓 rewatching all of the seasons of . It鈥檚 an old TV reality show about makeup artists.
As for movies, I like the ones based on Jane Austen鈥檚 books, such as and also . I love , too.
What is something people would be surprised to learn about you?
Maybe that I love playing . I have been playing it for 10 or 15 years. It鈥檚 really enjoyable. I think normally I鈥檓 somewhat of a quiet person, but in this game I can be brave and approach big monsters and kill them.
If you could choose your last meal, what would it be?
I would say it probably would be my mom鈥檚 fideo recipe 鈥 or maybe steak and lobster. No, definitely my mom鈥檚 fideo. Any of my mom鈥檚 cooking would be wonderful. My mother passed three years ago. Even though I did learn how to cook from her and I have a lot of her recipes, the food just doesn鈥檛 taste as good as when she made it. I think that鈥檚 how it usually works. Mom鈥檚 cooking always seems better than our own.
Caf茅 Rio used to have specials and on Fridays it was fideo. It tasted just like my mom鈥檚. I haven鈥檛 found any other as good. Caf茅 Rio doesn鈥檛 have specials any more. I wish they would share the recipe so I can make it.
