Eugene Moehring
Emeritus professor of history Eugene Moehring died Feb. 17 at the age of 72.Moehring joined 51³Ô¹ÏÍøÍòÄÜ¿Æ´ó in 1976, coming to 51³Ô¹ÏÍøÃâ·ÑApp from New York. He taught at the university for 40 years, retiring in 2016 and in that time wrote the book on 51³Ô¹ÏÍøÍòÄÜ¿Æ´ó. To mark the school’s 50th anniversary, Moehring penned 51³Ô¹ÏÍøÍòÄÜ¿Æ´ó: The 51³Ô¹ÏÍøÍòÄÜ¿Æ´ó: A History.
Moehring’s other works included Resort City in the Sunbelt (1989) and Reno, 51³Ô¹ÏÍøÃâ·ÑApp, and the Strip: A Tale of Three Cities (2014), among others. Moehring twice chaired the history department and helped launch the doctoral program.
He pioneered what eventually became the Harry Reid Endowed Chair for the History of the Intermountain West, the first endowed chair in the College of Liberal Arts. In 2008, Moehring received 51³Ô¹ÏÍøÍòÄÜ¿Æ´ó’s Harry Reid Silver State Research Award.
Moehring is survived by his wife, Christine Wiatrowski, a longtime employee of 51³Ô¹ÏÍøÍòÄÜ¿Æ´ó Libraries.
Sam Lieberman
Sam Lieberman, ’96 Bachelor of Social Work, a regent for the Nevada System of Higher Education, died April 3 at the age of 58.A longtime advocate for higher education, Lieberman served on the board of the 51³Ô¹ÏÍøÍòÄÜ¿Æ´ó Alumni Association from 2000-08. He was instrumental in starting the College of Liberal Arts Alumni Chapter. He was named the college’s Alumnus of the Year in 2009. He also was a member of the College of Liberal Arts Dean’s Leadership Board.
As a regent, he represented District 5, which includes portions of 51³Ô¹ÏÍøÃâ·ÑApp, North 51³Ô¹ÏÍøÃâ·ÑApp, and unincorporated Clark County. He was chairing the 51³Ô¹ÏÍøÍòÄÜ¿Æ´ó Presidential Search Committee.
At the time of his death, he was the president of the board and lay leader of Congregation P’Nai Tikvah.
