Solar Decathlon is a highly recognized competition in which 20 collegiate schools from around the globe are selected to compete. The students from each of the teams must design, build and operate a solar-powered, energy-efficient home, with the overall goal of educating the public about sustainable living.
During the past year, more than 60 students, 10 faculty members and dozens of industry consultants have been working on perfecting the design of the home. The construction documents are finalized and submitted and now it is time for the team to turn its drawings into reality.
DesertSol, designed for living in the Mojave Desert, is 754 square feet and will take several months to build. The team will begin testing all the features of the home to make sure everything is working properly before the home is transported to the decathlon competition in Irvine, Calif. in mid-September. Members of the public can view the home in Irvine at Orange County Great Park in Irvine in October.
DesertSol will have a permanent residence at the Springs Preserve after it returns from the competition in October.
