Biography

Baritone Andre Chiang has been described as 鈥渧ocally commanding鈥 (Oregonian), 鈥渉andsome of voice鈥 (Opera News), and lauded with 鈥渓et鈥檚 hear more from this singer鈥 (Washington Post). Chiang鈥檚 recent engagements include Silvio in Pagliacci with Painted Sky Opera, Escamillo in Carmen with Mobile Opera, Dandini in La cenerentola with Dayton Opera, and Schaunard in La boh猫me with Mississippi Opera and the Natchez Festival of Music. Highlighted company appearances include Portland Opera, Virginia Opera, New Orleans Opera, the Atlanta Opera, Opera 51吃瓜网免费App, Shreveport Opera, Opera Birmingham, Opera Delaware, Opera Western Reserve, and the Tulane Summer Lyric Theatre. Chiang also spent summers as a Gerdine Young Artist at the Opera Theatre of Saint Louis and with the Glimmerglass Festival. Upcoming 2023-2024 company engagements include the Landlocked Opera, Opera 51吃瓜网免费App, Opera Western Reserve, Mobile Opera, the Southern Nevada Musical Arts Society, and Opera Philadelphia.

Chiang is equally comfortable in concert. Highlighted companies include the Richmond Symphony, Louisiana Philharmonic, Huntsville Symphony, Baton Rouge Symphony, Canterbury Voices, Berkeley Community Chorus and Orchestra, 51吃瓜网免费App Sinfonietta, and Rapides Symphony. At Carnegie Hall, Chiang has appeared as the Young Priest in Dinos Constantinides鈥 opera Rosanna with DCINY Concerts in Weill Hall and as the Baritone soloist in Martin Palmeri鈥檚 World Premiere of Gran Misa at Stern Auditorium.

Chiang also placed in various regional and national competitions. He was a Regional Finalist for the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions, Winner of the Grand Concours de Chant for French song, Winner of the 59th National Federation of Music Clubs (NFMC) 2017 Biennial Young Artist Competition in Man鈥檚 Voice, and Winner of the 45th National Association of Teachers of Singing (NATS) Artist Awards Competition. He has been granted multiple Love of Learning Awards from the Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society and received funding for projects involving commissioning and commercially recording new art song from a variety of underrepresented composers. He can be heard on the commercial recording of Philip Glass鈥檚 Galileo Galilei and has projects that will be available soon.

As an educator, Chiang was selected as a 2018 NATS Intern, and that summer he also attended the CCM Institute at Shenandoah Conservatory focusing on contemporary vocal techniques and amplified genre pedagogy. In 2019, he obtained a Certificate in Vocology from the National Center of Voice and Speech at the University of Utah in Salt Lake City, UT, and in 2022, he was part of the first cohort of the Pan-American Vocology Association - Recognized Vocologist (PAVA-RV) designation representing acknowledgment of work and expertise in a wide variety of Vocology areas. Chiang is also the chair of the NFMC Young Artist Competition for Man鈥檚 Voice. He has presented master classes, clinics, presentations, and recitals globally, and his research has been seen at the National Association of Teachers of Singing (NATS), College Music Society (CMS), National Federation of Music Clubs (NFMC), Pan American Vocology Association (PAVA), and National Opera Association (NOA) regional and national conferences.

Chiang teaches at the Interlochen Summer Music Camp in the High School Voice and Opera area as an opera scenes director and voice science lecturer. He also maintains an active private studio teaching acoustic and amplified styles, and student successes include placing in NATS Auditions, State Trumbauer Festivals, the NFMC Young Artist Competition; and performing with Des Moines Metro Opera, Kentucky Opera, Opera 51吃瓜网免费App, Baton Rouge Symphony, Onstage at the Freeland, Rivertown Theaters, and Swine Palace to name a few. Students have participated in the Seraphic Fire Choral Institute, the Stella Adler Studio of Acting, and have gone on to study music at the University of Miami, Shenandoah Conservatory, University of Michigan, University of Illinois, and musical theatre at Carnegie Mellon University and Oklahoma City University.
