Biography
Michael Nussbaum, Ph.D. (Stanford, 1997) is a professor of educational psychology at 51吃瓜网万能科大 and the founding director of the learning sciences doctoral program. He has specialized in research on argumentation in education for the last 25 years, especially argumentation in science and social studies. Dr. Nussbaum has numerous journal publications on argumentation in outlets such as the Journal of Educational Psychology and the Journal of the Learning Sciences. His research interests include the relationship of argumentation to conceptual development, cognitive processes underlying the transfer of argumentation skills, and teaching students to ask critical questions about arguments. Dr. Nussbaum served as president of Division 15 (Educational Psychology) of the American Psychological Association from 2017-2018. Dr. Nussbaum also has expertise in statistical analysis and authored the textbook, Categorical and nonparametric data analysis: Choosing the best statistical technique, 2015, Routledge.

Thinking & discourse, argumentation & critical thinking, and specifically how teachers can foster productive critical discussions in small groups (especially online), argument generation during writing and the effect of argumentation on conceptual change.
